2008 CWG USA Conference, Marco Island, Florida, October 6th - 8th

Conference Theme:  Emerging Themes in Configuration

The CWG Board of Directors is pleased to announce that this year's fall conference will again be held in Marco Island, Florida, USA.  The dates are Monday October 6th thru Wednesday October 8th.  Mark you calendars now for this event.  Based on feedback we've received, we expect this to be one of the largest conferences we've ever had.

The Formal call for papers will come in the next weeks, but we want to present you with a discussion or our theme for you to consider.

There was a period, during the mid-to-late 1990's, when configuration was all the rage.
It drew enormous amounts of analyst and business attention, and was considered an essential follow-on to the topics of mass customization and agile manufacturing.  But then somehow attention seemed to drift away.  The major software vendors started to get caught up in themes like "Enterprise Application Integration," and competing against each other on the basis of their abilities to either fuse or weave disparate applications together.  Configuration seemed to be all but forgotten as a topic worthy of any self-respecting IT Manager's attention.

But now we find, suddenly, that if you are in a company in High-tech, or Automotive, or Aerospace and Defense, or if you in a company specializing in Industrial Machinery, or if you are in a company in the process industries - paper milling, or steel milling, for example - then configuration is coming back on your radar.  You find that you need to deal with issues like embedding configurable software in otherwise configurable hardware products; or you need to deal with issues like being able to upgrade configurable equipment that's been sitting for some number of years at a customer site; or you need to deal with the fact that your company is now driving initiatives around selling configurable products bundled up into configurable solutions; or you even find out that you need to (still) offer your business partners a way of configuring your products or solutions without being online.  You are the CIO of one of these companies, or the Director of Marketing for one of these companies, or perhaps you are the Manager of the "Configuration Department," or maybe you're "just" one of the technicians responsible for making sure your company's products get presented in an understandable, specifiable way to the outside world.  And you want to make sense of how you deal with these issues.

This upcoming CWG Conference is dedicated to you.   In it you'll find the experts, people who've been dealing with these issues for years, or people who've been forced to get themselves as educated as possible about them in the shortest possible time, and you'll discover what might be very reasonable approaches for solving very difficult problems.  We also will encourage those with unanswered problems to bring them before the conference membership to get ideas for solutions and perhaps to cause each of us to reflect on our own implementations and assess whether this may be a yet to be uncovered problem for ourselves.

Registration details will be forthcoming soon.  Please
click here if you feel that you may be attending this conference or are interested in attending, just to give us a clearer picture of the number of members that we may expect.  Also feel free to add any comments that would make your conference experience better !
